Exactly one year ago I was on the road taking a journey that changed my life for the better. I had retired from the Central Intelligence Agency after a (I'd like to think) successful twenty-three year career, packed up my Forester with my four rabbits in special travel cages, and set out on a sixteen-hour drive to Gainesville, Florida to be with Alison Beightol. It was one of the most momentous decisions of my life, and one I do not regret.
For those who don't know the story, Alison is a fellow author of her own vampire trilogy (Blood Betrayal and Blood Beginnings of The Primegenio Tales) who reached out to me four years ago to say how much she loved my first novel, The Vampire Hunters. Over time, we became good friends and colleagues, and Alison provided emotional support during a very difficult period of my life. We began dating in November 2011, got engaged exactly one year later, and were married on Halloween 2013 in the chapel of the Gainesville VA Hospital so Alison's father, who was in the terminal stage of bladder cancer, could give away his beloved daughter.
As I made the long journey from northern Virginia to Florida, I had no idea what would be in store for me, but my hopes were high. Sadly, fate had other plans. It has been a difficult year. The family has suffered numerous health related tragedies and setbacks. The new house flooded one month after we moved in and repairing the damage destroyed our savings because, despite having flood insurance, the insurers refused to pay out on the claim. Plus, on a personal note, three of my four rabbits passed away from old age.
Despite all the negatives, I gained much more from this move than I lost. Alison's family has adopted me as one of their own. Madeline, my stepdaughter, is a lovely young lady who thinks highly of me. Alison's boxers, Walther and Bella, consider me part of the pack (or at least the most useful member since I can open the fridge). And I have become a cat lover.
The writing front had some temporary setbacks as we tried to keep our lives from falling apart, but all that is about to change. Emby Press is re-releasing The Vampire Hunters trilogy throughout the year and, in a few months, will be including my short story "From Space It Came" (a giant spider from space) in an upcoming anthology. In the next few months, Blood Bound Books will be publishing Yeitso, my first foray into the big monster genre and my homage to the monster movies of the 1950s that had such an impact on my life. My sequel to Rotter World is with Permuted Press for publication later this year, and Hell Gate, my first young adult novel, is being reviewed by a literary agent. And I am currently involved in three other writing projects,
But the best part of all is Alison is now a permanent part of my life. She is my best friend, colleague, soon-to-be-coauthor, confidante, lover, wife, and soul mate. And tomorrow marks the anniversary of our moving in together. It was the best decision I ever made.

Photos from WizardCon in New Orleans
I usually don't post photographs from conventions that I attend as a fan, but in this case I wanted to make an exception. Last weekend, Alison and I took our daughter to WizardCon in Orlando so she could meet her idol -- Matt "The 11th Doctor" Smith. This was a pre-birthday gift, and we're so glad we took Maddy because she had an awesome time.
Over the years I've attended a lot of conventions and met a lot of celebrities, and on most occasions it's been great. However, every once in a while, you meet someone who turns out to be a jerk. Not so with Matt. This poor guy had been run ragged for hours signing autographs or taking photos with literally thousands of fans. The convention organizers had his events scheduled so tightly that if you got to spend five seconds with Matt, you were lucky. When it was the turn for our group to get their photo taken, the three of us waited in line for almost an hour while hundreds of others ahead of us filed in. It was finally our turn. Maddy walked up to Matt and asked if he would hold her sonic screwdriver. Matt grabbed the screwdriver, flipped it open, hugged her close, and struck his Doctor pose (see below). A second later, the organizers ushered her back into the main hall. Maddy dropped to her knees, gave a double fist pump in the air, and screamed, "YES!!!" Many thanks to Matt Smith for being an awesome human being and making a fan girl's day.
And Alison paid for me to have a photo with Cassandra "Elvira" Peterson.
Maddy with a Dalek.
Maddy the Time Lord arrives at the convention.
Maddy faces down a Weeping Angel.
Maddy and I with a replica of the Bat Mobile (notice who gets to hold the bomb).
And while Maddy and Alison waited in long lines, I find ways to amuse myself.

The Vampire Hunters Will Soon Be Available Again
I delivered the final draft of The Vampire Hunters to Emby Press this week. We are shooting for a February release date, so my book should be back on the market soon. The second printing of The Vampire Hunters: Vampyrnomicon and The Vampire Hunters: Dominion will take place later this year. Also, Emby Press and I are in discussions over possibly continuing the saga with a series of short stories/novellas that take the story beyond the third book.

Productive Week
I had
a very productive week. I finished the rewrite for Rotter World II.
Now I have to go back, double check several facts, run spell and grammar
check, and then give it a final proof read before submitting the manuscript to Permuted
Press before the 1 February deadline. Also, I am almost finished with my interview questions for Julianne
Snow.
After that, I will review the proofs for the second edition of The Vampire Hunters and will prepare for the publication of Yeitso. I'll post more information about those as it becomes available.

I Will Not Be Attending SwampCon
A last minute change in plans has occurred, and I will not be able to attend SwampCon this weekend as I originally intended. I do plan on making every effort to attend next year.
